What do I bring?

We will provide all technical climbing gear. However, you are responsible for the recommended items.

  • lunch and high-energy snacks
  • water, at least 2 liters per person

Where is the meeting spot?

It depends!

For rock climbing in the Gunks (including AMGA courses), we meet in the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center parking lot.

For ice climbing in the Adirondacks, we meet at the Stewart’s Gas Station in Keene, NY.

For ice climbing in the Catskills, we meet at the Mountain Skills Office.

Can I use my own gear?

We are happy to outfit every participant with the necessary technical climbing gear. However, if you have your own gear, yes, feel free to bring it. We will inspect it to ensure everything is in safe working condition.

Do I tip climbing guides?

Climbing guides frequently receive gratuities. The amount of gratuity you leave with your guide is up to you and varies depending on the service provided.

What clothing and footwear should I wear?

The goal is to wear comfortable, active-wear clothing appropriate for the forecasted weather. Reliable closed-toed shoes are mandatory; please do not wear sandals.

For rock climbing in the summer, that could mean shorts and a T-shirt. During chillier months, pants and long sleeves are a good idea.

For ice climbing, the clothing is very similar to other winter sports. You want to wear multiple adjustable layers of clothing with a waterproof jacket and pants. Click here for a complete list of recommended ice climbing clothing.
