Want to learn to lead trad? Our Learn to Lead Course will teach you basic skills to get started leading in the Gunks. Here’s a list of recommended gear you will need to be successful.

We can help supply technical rock climbing equipment you might be missing from the lists. However, you are responsible for all clothing and other personal items (e.g., food, water, etc).

Required Gear

• UIAA/CE Approved harness with belay loop
• UIAA/CE Approved helmet
• Belay/Rappel device (e.g., Petzl Reverso. Black Diamond ATC, other device with guide-mode capability)
• Climbing shoes
• Chalk bag

Recommended Gear

• 6x HMS/Pear-shaped locking carabiners
• 2x 4ft Nylon Runners
• Cordelette of 7mm accessory cord 16-20ft
• Prussik loop of 5mm cord or something similar (e.g., Sterling Hollowblock)
• Set of Stoppers/Nuts
• Full or Double Set of Cams .02 to #3
• 12 Alpine draws
• Backpack for carrying gear
• Petzl GriGri (or similar assisted braking device)
• Approach shoes
• Tri-cams (pink, red, and/or brown)
• 6 Spare non-locking carabiners
